GRC's Michaela Kissell is Miami-bound

Three-time state Class AAA singles champion Michaela Kissell, of Greater Latrobe High
School and a member of the Greensburg Racquet Club, has accepted a full tennis
scholarship from the University of Miami, in Florida.

Kissell never lost a high school match and won both the WPIAL and PIAA singles
championships as a freshman, sophomore and junior. She missed her senior season due to
a knee injury sustained during a WTA event in Texas in July. She said she has undergone
physical rehabilitation and is scheduled to play again in February in preparation for her
return to the court at the Division I university level.

Kissell received letters of interest from Georgia Tech, Georgia, Baylor, Texas and Notre
Dame, among other schools. She said she had considered offers from Pitt and North
Carolina State before deciding on Miami, which is nationally ranked and lost to Stanford in
the NCAA finals last year.

The decision to accept the Miami offer was easy, she said. "I visited the campus and loved
it," said Kissell. Regarding her potential position on the team, she added: "There's only one
position I want to play (No. 1 singles), but wherever I earn is where I will play."

Kissell says she plans to major in communications and education.

Michaela's mother, Kim, who is a tennis instructor at the Greensburg Racquet Club, had
earned a tennis scholarship to Florida Southern College. Michaela's sister, Latrobe
freshman Joelle, teamed with Allie Seranko to win the WPIAL and PIAA Class AAA doubles
championship last year.
